Mike Gill recently joined Hancock Daniel as a director after serving the last 16 years as an Assistant U.S. Attorney and DEA Chief of Staff. He has extensive federal prosecution and corporate experience forming a solid foundation for representing clients facing allegations of regulatory, civil, or criminal misconduct.
From 2000 up through 2015, Mike served as a federal prosecutor in the Eastern District of Virginia and Northern District of Texas. Within those offices, he was well-respected by colleagues and judges for his handling of some of the most sensitive and complex cases. As an Assistant U.S. Attorney, Mike:
- Prosecuted complex corruption, financial fraud, health care fraud, money laundering, national security, racketeering, tax fraud, and other cases from investigation through appeal;
- Tried 48 federal cases to jury verdict and argued 7 cases before the Fourth and Fifth Circuit Courts of Appeal;
- Led countless complex investigations, working alongside DEA, FBI, HHS, ICE, IRS, and other federal and state investigative agencies; and
- Served as a Deputy Criminal Supervisor and Senior Trial Counsel within the Eastern District of Virginia.
Most recently before joining the Hancock Daniel team, Mike served as Chief of Staff for the DEA in Washington, D.C. For that agency of over 9,000 employees, he worked extensively to enhance operations in Compliance, Diversion Control, Inspections, and other areas.
Mike focuses his practice on representing businesses and individuals in relation to federal and state investigations and enforcement actions. He also provides corporate compliance, cybersecurity, and investigations representation, helping businesses to identify, manage, and fix problems ahead of government scrutiny. Based on his experience as a federal prosecutor and DEA’s Chief of Staff, Mike knows that experienced representation is critical for avoiding problems or minimizing their impact at the very start of an investigation. “I’ve worked with government investigators and oversight agencies for the past 16 years,” he says. “I know the process, strategies, and how to work with clients to effectively deal with situations before they get out of hand.”
