The Office of Civil Rights (OCR) announced, yesterday, that it has commenced Phase 2 of its HIPAA Audit Program. This announcement comes in the wake of public criticism by the Office of Inspector General (OIG) regarding OCR’s lack of enforcement of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). Phase 2 of OCR’s HIPAA Audit Program will assess covered entities’ and business associates’ compliance with selected standards and implementation specifications of HIPAA’s Privacy, Security, and Breach Notification Rules.
