The second Wednesday of each January marks the convening of the Virginia General Assembly. In the ensuing days legislation is considered that impacts every Virginian and every business interest. Businesses and associations realize that it is essential to have our team as an advocate at the General Assembly to protect their interests. Success during the session depends on preparation and year round planning.
W. Scott Johnson leads the government relations team at Hancock Daniel. Mr. Johnson has been involved with the Virginia General Assembly since 1986. He is repeatedly named by his peers as a Legal Elite in Government Relations by Virginia Business magazine and by Best Lawyers in America. Mr. Johnson has experience in advocating positions on behalf of our clients at the General Assembly involving the following issues: tort reform, healthcare, medical malpractice litigation, business litigation, insurance regulatory oversight, taxes, business organizational structures, workers’ compensation, professional liability, information technology, alcohol and beverage control, wetlands protection, environmental liability, title protection for professionals, and appropriation budget amendments.
Benjamin H. Traynham represents a wide variety of interests before the General Assembly, including health care, small business, energy, and environment. He has nearly a decade of federal and state legislative experience, previously having lobbied for a national trade association and served as a senior policy counsel in Congress. In his law practice, he represents health care providers before administrative and regulatory bodies. Understanding the intersection of government and industry, Ben applies that knowledge to solve complex issues facing clients.
Tyler S. Cox is the manager of the government relations team. She oversees the day to day operations of the team and is at the Capitol every day during the General Assembly Session. Prior to joining Hancock Daniel, Ms. Cox worked for the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association managing their political action committee.
