The Virginia Senate Republican Caucus today elected its leadership team for the four-year term beginning on January 8, 2020.
Senator Thomas K. Norment, Jr. (R-James City) was elected to his fourth term as Senate Republican Leader. Senator Ryan T. McDougle (R-Hanover) was elected to his third full term as Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus and Senator Mark D. Obenshain was elected to his second term as Co-Chairman of the Senate Republican Caucus. Senator William M. Stanley, Jr. (R-Franklin) and Senator Bryce E. Reeves (R-Spotsylvania) were elected as Senate Republican Whips. Senator Stephen D. Newman (R-Bedford) was chosen as Republican Leader Pro Tempore.
“As evidenced by the legislation submitted by our Democrat colleagues and their House counterparts since pre-filing commenced early this week, the Democrats are attempting to enact their version of the ‘new’ Virginia,” said Senator Norment.
“With Virginia’s economy, fiscal stability, and reputation for being America’s best state for business in the balance, Senate Republicans will be advocating the pro-growth policies that have made Virginia – and Virginians – prosperous.
“While Senate Republicans will seek consensus with our Democrat colleagues wherever possible, we will not be complicit in efforts to weaken decades of bipartisan support for sensible policies that have served our state so well.
“With experience, skill, and dedication, our leadership team is prepared to hold the majority to account. Most importantly, we will be standing up for the Virginians who sent us here to be their voice and to represent their values.”
